Passover meal
Our Friends in London, who during advent and lent come together once a week for a prayer sharing, had their yearly “Passover meal”, on Tuesday evening of the Holy Week.
This meal does not reconstruct an authentic Passover ritual of either Christ's time or of present day Judaism. But by using some of the basic Jewish prayers and an adaptation of the traditional questions of the Passover meal, Christians can become somewhat familiar with the tradition of the Jews. New Testament texts are used not only to build appreciation and understanding of the Christian beliefs but also of their relationship to Judaic roots.
The photos show our own table prepared for the meal with the traditional menorah (9 branched-candlestick) with the Father and Mother, Graham and Joan, presiding. Also pictured is Poppy who is the youngest and asks the traditional questions for explanation of the symbolism We have bitter herbs and salt water to represent the suffering of the chosen people. Finally we enjoy the roast lamb meal together.
Both feasts, Passover for the Jews and Easter for Christians, recognize that all things come from God: light, bread, wine, freedom… all good things.
Both are rooted in history and in Scripture to show God's fulfillment of his plan of salvation and a call to commit ourselves to live our faith from day to day.
It is a deep spiritual experience and a deepening of our own Christian faith. Through the prayers, Scripture readings and Psalms this Passover meal prepares us to enter more deeply in our own Celebrations during the Holy Week
